1066 Country is steeped in history and comprises of a number of uniquely English towns and villages which (contrary to the reception given in 1066!) offer visitors a very warm welcome.
Hastings is arguably the most famous - for the Battle Of Hastings. But the Norman Invasion of 1066 started in Pevensey, where the Normans landed. The area in which King Harold actually fell, as some miles outside Hastings, in Battle.
Although Hastings gladly lends its name to one of the most important parts of English History (and celebrates Hasting's Day on October 15th each year) the town does have another important claim to fame - the television!.
One of the 21st Century's most popular inventions was first demonstrated in Hastings where John Logie Baird famously set fire to his apartment in Queens Arcade. It is ironic that until recently, television reception in the town was less than perfect!
The East and West Cliffs dominate each end of Hastings town, joining the Old Town with the New. The top of the Cliffs (which can be accessed by foot, or Cliff Railway) provide vantage points across the English Channel and of Europe's biggest beach-launched fishing fleet.
Although the first example of a Norman Castle lies in ruin at the crest of the East Cliff, it is still acccessible. Nearby Bodiam, to the North, has one of the most picturesque and well maintained castles with stunning views amidst the Sussex Countryside.
Proudly boasting that you'll live, rather than learn about history, it's well worth planning to Visit Hastings and 1066 Country
